This was the state when given to me. The basic structure was wood & ply with each ‘arch’ narrowing from the outside radius to the inside, meaning that the lining of the ‘roof’ of each arch was going to be tricky.

The first step was to cover the ‘wall’ alongside the track with Metcalfe brick paper. The top of the wall was then covered with Plastruct channelling. The Brick ‘buttresses’ were made from plaster moulded brickwork.

The next step was to cover the whole of the outer surface of the viaduct with Slaters embossed plasticard which had been sprayed with a light grey primer. This was then textured and weathered by use of 3 grey and one brown washes, both acrylic and oils.

The lining of the roof of each of the arches was then undertaken, using Metcalfe Gritstone brick paper. Due to the narrowing from outer to inner, each section had to be ‘slit’ to allow a taper to take place. Once this was complete each arch was ‘trimmed’ with Plastruct angle which neatly ‘hides the join’. The way to do this on a curve is to cut one side of the angle with wire cutters, which not only forms it into a nice curve, but also gives the impression of slab separation. I tried similar with cutting with a razor saw, but this made the arch fragile and inclined to snap when bending around the curve.

I then constructed a ‘box’ from cardboard, covered with Slaters plasticard, for each of the piers. These were then topped with Plastruct strip to simulated slate toppings. Plastruct angle was then used of the joints, scribed to simulate individual blocks. A similar method was used on Plastruct square tubing that was placed below the brick section to ‘top out’ the stone section.

Drain pipes were then added, on alternate piers, these were made with wood dowel for the lower thick section and Plastruct rod for the upper, cisterns were made from square section plastic rod. The whole was then tastefully decorated with various bits of foliage stuck on ledges and holes etc. More will be added when the whole is bedded into the main layout.

The elapsed time from beginning to end has been something like 2 months, actual time about 60 hours, due to having to wait overnight etc for paint & glue to dry. Adhesives were a mixture of impact, superglue, liquid poly and PVA. Total cost for all materials, paint, glue etc was some £88.
