SEPTEMBER
UPDATE |
| This is the first of (hopefully) monthly updates to
keep members and visitors informed of the progress (or lack of it)
to the re-build of the ‘00’ gauge group “Lawton Hey” 24 foot by 10
foot centre operated layout. |

|
| A BIT ABOUT THE GROUP |
The group has seen a very healthy and consistent increase
in members over the past 12 months or more, and we currently have
21 ‘00’ group members, with around half of us being retired, this
has resulted in a very active ‘Monday’ group of around 6 to 8 members,
joining together with some of the retired members of the ‘0’ group
for a very enjoyable and (dare I say it? …) productive time from around
9:30 am to 3:30pm … (and yes, we even take our lunches with us … just
like going out to work !!! but much more enjoyable.)
The skills, interests, and wishes of these members vary widely across
most aspects of the hobby with everyone helping everyone else not
only on the club layout, but on our own individual layouts as well. |

|
| WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING |
There has been quite a lot of discussion concerning
the layout’s running conditions over previous months/years, and it
was felt that the main base boards were getting to the point where
they had been ‘hacked around and modified’ so many times they had
become too ‘flimsy’ (if that is the right word) to give a reliable
and solid foundation for us to produce an exhibition standard layout
with good portability etc.
To this end, it was decided that we would re-new all the baseboards
in sections over a period of time to a much more sturdy design, the
pictures indicate the initial boards that have been modified and replaced.
This replacement operation will continue over months to come. |

|
| THE MAIN LINE |
The UP and DOWN main line tracks have been re-laid on
the new baseboards with a foam type underlay which makes for very
quiet running and noise reduction.
As we work round the layout replacing the baseboards, the tracks will
be re-laid / replaced accordingly to achieve a good running quality.
The main lines (and fiddle yards) are the primary operating sections
required for the clubs running nights (these are usually the second
Friday in each month, but check the notice boards and website for
confirmation.) |

 |
|
| THE BRANCH LINE |
| After long and sometimes heated discussions, with varied
opinions and idea’s about what a branch line should be, a final ‘plan’
has at last ‘come together’ which does have some extremely good features
and capabilities, where several points (excuse the pun) have been
incorporated to produce an extended track area with some nice hidden
features that will keep the public guessing as to ‘how did it do that’
or’ where did that come from’ etc. |
 |
 |
|
| |
|
| THE GOODS YARD |
| This is currently in discussion where members are being
asked for practical idea’s of the requirements for a suitable goods
area adjacent to what will be the main line station, so this is an
on-going subject at this time. |
 |
 |
|
| |
|
| THE FIDDLE YARDS |
| The fiddle yards have largely been left unchanged at
this time, and will remain unchanged until the baseboards are replaced
sometime in the future. |
 |
 |
|
| Well, that’s about it for this opening gambit, without
giving too much to read through that it becomes boring, and hopefully
the next update (planned for October) will go into a little more detail
of individual area’s and sections etc. |
